The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data
compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from
the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is
collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the
data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees
about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check
with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.

Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'.

provided by the data sources. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center

of the materials, either expressly or implied, including but not limited
to any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular
purpose, or non-infringement. The University of Florida GeoPlan Center
shall not be liable for any damages suffered as a result of using,
modifying, contributing or distributing the materials.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
In order to enhance access to the University of Florida's George A. Smathers
Library's historic aerial photographs collection, the collection's paper photo mosaic
aerial index sheets were digitally photographed and the digital images geo-
referenced. The geo-referenced mosaics were then used to create a Geographic
Information Systems point layer, each point representing the approximate location of
an individual air photo tile that made up the mosaic. Individual air photo tiles in the
collection were scanned but not geo-referenced. The Aerial Photography: Florida
Collection project was funded under the provisions of the Library Services and
Technology Act, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by
the Florida Department of State, State Library and Archives of Florida. The Aerial
Photography: Florida Collection was funded by three Library Services and
Technology Act grants (Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III). Additionally, the Florida
Department of Transportation donated scanned aerial images to Phase III of the
project. The Collection can be found at: http://ufdc.ufl.edu/aerials, or by
searching: http://uflib.ufl.edu.

Photomosaic Image Capture:
Image capture of the individual 9 x 9 inch aerial tiles and the 20 x 24 inch
photomosaic indexes adhered to the guidelines promulgated by the Cornell
Department of Preservation and Conservation (see Digital Imaging for Library and
Archives, Anne R. Kenny and Stephen Chapman, Ithaca, NY : Cornell University
Library, 1996). The photomosaic indexes were digitally photographed using a
planetary PhaseOne PowerPhase FX 4x5 inch digital camera back with a 10,500
pixel by 12,600 pixel scanning area and a 8-bit greyscale. The camera back is
mounted on a planetary ZBE Satellite universal scanning system that is no longer
manufactured. It includes a three turret mounted lenses & bellows, a camera stand,
and an automated control system for calibrated imaging. A Rodenstock Rodagon
135 mm professional enlarging lens (f/5.6-f/22)) with an AR1 high aspect ratio filter
was used for imaging.

Geo-Referencing:
Creating a single county wide geo-referenced photomosaic involved collecting
image coordinate points along the edge of the image, internal to the image and
where images overlapped. Ground control points that visually matched image point
locations were also collected. ESRI's ArcMap and Arc/Info were used to collect
the points. The State of Florida's LABINS 3 meter digital orthophoto quads and
UF's GeoPlan Center's Florida Geographic Data Library ancillary data were used to
locate ground control points. Utilizing a double 2D transformation program created
by Dr. Bon DeWitt, UF Geomatics Professor, the image point coordinates were
transformed to ground control coordinates. Image and ground control coordinates
were accepted when the double 2D transformation standard deviation was one and
the Root Mean Squared Error measurement was less than 100 meters. Images
were converted to ESRI ArcInfo Grids, geo-referenced, and then mosaicked into a
single county image.

Point Layer Creation
Utilizing ESRI's Arc/Info a point layer of individual photo tile locations was created
by identifying the tile's flight number in the mosaicked image and selecting the geo-
referenced mosaic X, and Y location that matched approximately 1 inch in and one
inch done from the upper right hand corner of the individual tile.
