FLORIDA GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION
VERSION 2004

TITLE: SELECTED SEA TURTLE NESTS, 1998 - 1999

Geodataset Name: NESTS
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: POINT
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This shapefile is a series of points denoting the locations of sea turtle nests laid on Northwest Florida's beaches between 1998 and 1999 and were set up with data loggers by which the temperature of the nests was recorded. Control sites for data loggers where there are no nests are included in a separate shapefile.

USER NOTES:
GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within the original data.

The purpose of this shapefile is to give a visual representation of locations of where temperature information was taken during sea turtle nesting seasons 1998 through 2002. Nest information was only recorded in

This shapefile was created in part for and with information collected by a team headed by Martha Maglothin as part of Graduate Research Project "Incubation Temperatures and Sex Ratios of Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) Hatched on Northwest Florida Beaches" for the University of Florida. 1998 and 1999.

A note concerning data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale
datasetsare not suitable for some project, analysis, or
modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best
available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that
are at the county level.

1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base
mapping such as property parcel boundaries.

1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that
are at the multi-county or regional level.

1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that
are at the regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should
be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with
your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every
effort has been made to supply the user with data
documentation. For additional information, see the
References sectionand the Data Source Contact section of
this documentation. For more information regarding scale
and accuracy, see our web pages at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:

1. Brought table of individual site latitude and longitude
into ArcView from Excel as a dbf file

2. Made into shapefile with Add Event Theme

3. Repeated for each year for each of 10 sites

4. Merged all shapefiles for all years and sites into one shapefile

5. Projected from decimal degrees to custom FL Albers projection
