Geodataset Name: SCENIC_BYWAYS_NOV08
Geodataset Type: SHAPEFILE
Geodataset Feature: Polyline
Feature Count: 25
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This dataset contains designated and candidate Florida Scenic Highways and Byways. The Scenic Highway Program is an initiative of the Florida Department of Transportation's Environmental Management Office. This program is a partnership between Florida Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Florida citizen groups, businesses, and local governments. The Florida Scenic Highways Program is designed to enhance travelers' experience. This, in turn, provides subsequent benefits to the community. The designated scenic highways promote a heightened awareness of the state's exceptional resources and unique history through educational and visual experiences. The program was developed in response to legislation (Section 335.093, Florida Statutes) "to preserve, maintain, protect and enhance Florida's outstanding cultural, historical, archeological, recreational, natural and scenic resources." This dataset is an update to the 2004 FGDL - SCENIC_HWYS.SHP layer.

Florida Scenic Highway Program
Program Review

What is the Florida Scenic Highways Program?

It's a grass-roots effort to heighten awareness of our State's historical and intrinsic
resources - cultural, historical, archeological, recreational, natural and scenic -
which collectively, enhance the overall traveling experience. Program participation
provides subsequent benefits to the community as well, such as resource
preservation, enhancement and protection.

Who can participate?

Anyone with an interest in their community can participate in this voluntary
program, including citizens, civic groups, businesses and governments. As with
any grass-roots effort though, organization is key. Therefore, interested parties
must form a Corridor Advocacy Group to help foster community support, form
strong partnerships and develop the necessary documentation.

What are the benefits?

There are numerous benefits to program participation:

    * Showcases and protects natural resources
    * Helps establish community vision
    * Enhances the travel experience (for tourists as well as residents)
    * Improves quality of life
    * Increases community pride and recognition
    * Promotes tourism and economic development
    * Encourages community partnering
    * Tells Florida's story, providing education and history appreciation

How does the program work?

The program consists of a step-by-step process divided into three phases:

    I. Eligibility - During this first phase, a Corridor Advocacy Group gathers and
prepares documentation to show that the Corridor meets program criteria, outlining
the Corridor's intrinsic resources, and demonstrating community support.

II. Designation - Once eligibility is determined, the Corridor Advocacy Group
prepares a Corridor Management Plan, which represents a comprehensive
collection of support data, protection techniques and management strategies for
the Corridor.

III. Implementation - During the final phase, the points outlined in the Corridor
Management Plan are put into action.

In summary, the Florida Scenic Highways Program offers a unique blend of
resource protection and partnering while promoting community pride and
recognition of our State's outstanding resources.

The data was created to serve as base information for use in GIS systems for a
variety of planning and analytical purposes.

The Florida Scenic Highways Program will preserve, enhance and maintain the
intrinsic resources of scenic corridors through a sustainable balance of
conservation and land use. Through community-based consensus and
partnerships, the program will promote economic prosperity and broaden the
traveler's overall recreational and educational experience.

The Florida Geographic Data Library is a collection of Geospatial Data
compiled by the University of Florida GeoPlan Center with support from
the Florida Department of Transportation. GIS data available in FGDL is
collected from various state, federal, and other agencies (data sources)
who are data stewards, producers, or publishers. The data available in
FGDL may not be the most current version of the data offered by the
data source. University of Florida GeoPlan Center makes no guarantees
about the currentness of the data and suggests that data users check
with the data source to see if more recent versions of the data exist.

Furthermore, the GIS data available in the FGDL are provided 'as is'.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets
are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes.
Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
county level.
1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such
as property parcel boundaries.
1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
multi-county or regional level.
1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the
regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be
considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data
before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been
made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional
information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact
section of this documentation. For more information regarding
scale and accuracy, see our webpage at:

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
Place holder for Transystems Process Steps
Process Date: 20081114

GeoPlan Center Process Steps: GeoPlan received the data from TranSystems on November 14th, 2008 via email. The data received originally consisted of 25 individual Florida Scenic Highway/Byway Designated and Candidate layers. The original file names are as follows: Candidate: Heritage_Crossroads_Miles_of_History_Scenic_Highway.shp Martin_Grade_Scenic_Byway.shp Penney_Farms_Scenic_Highway.shp River_of_Lakes_Heritage_Corridor.shp StateRoad_A1A_BrowardCounty_Scenic_Highway.shp Designated: A1A_Scenic_and_Historic_Coastal_Byway.shp Big_Bend_Scenic_Byway.shp Bradenton_Beach_Scenic_Highway.shp Courtney_Campbell_Scenic_Highway.shp Florida_Black_Bear.shp Florida_Keys_Scenic_Highway.shp Green_Mountain_Scenic_Byway.shp Indian_River_Lagoon_Scenic_Highway.shp Indian_River_Lagoon_Treasure_Coast_Scenic_Highway.shp Lemon_Bay_Myakka_Trail.shp Old_Florida_Heritage_Byway.shp Ormond_Beach_Loop.shp Palma_Sola_Scenic_Highway.shp Pensacola_Scenic_Bluffs_Highway.shp Scenic_30A.shp Suncoast_Scenic_Parkway.shp Tamiami_Trail_Scenic_Highway.shp The_Ridge_Scenic_Highway.shp William_Bartram_Scenic_Historic_Trail.shp Windows_to_the_Gulf_Coast_Waters_Tamaimi_Trail.shp The original datasets had a scale of 1:24,000 with a projection system of Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) 17 North zone and a horizontal datum of North American 1983 (NAD 1983). The map units were in meters. The 25 data layers were combined to create one statewide layer. During this process the following fields were added and populated: SCENIC_HWY STATUS DESIG_DATE ELIG_DATE NATIONAL NAT_DESIG LENGTH_MI DESCRIPT FGDLAQDATE Next the combine statewide dataset was reprojected to the FGDL Albers NAD83 HARN GRS80 projection. Next the statewide layer containing 251 features was dissolved based on it's scenic highway/byway name to created 25 unique features. Process Date: 20081114
